Mental Illness

How can one tell if there is a mental illness present in another person or that of them self. Unfortunately mental illness or mental disorders are not terms easy to define and it is because of this that any misunderstanding on these health issues lead to incorrect use of the terminology which therefore then encourages reinforcement of myths which can result in people not getting medical help when they are in most need of it.

It is sad to say that people who suffer from a mental illness are sometimes cast out of society and pushed to aside like that of a leper. These people need compassionate understanding from others who are in a position to think more clearly - than the sick. In general mental illness refers to clinically significant patterns of behavioural or emotional functioning that are associated with some level or distress, suffering (pain, death), or impairment in one or more areas of functioning, this could be schooling or at work.

To have a better understanding on any health matter will help the sufferer/ patient to cope with his or her symptoms and understand more about the suggested treatment at the time of the mental illness being diagnosed.

Myth has it: That people suffering from a mental illness are looney, psycho, dangerous and have to be locked away, when in fact these patients with a mental illness more often than not only have problems coping with day to day activities. A person diagnosed with a mental illness is at greater risk of harming them self before that of others so no real danger to the public. Of course some cases do differ, where depending on severity of the state of mind sectioning may be recommended, implementing this decision is a precautionary procedure directed towards having the patients best interest at heart.

Once again back to hearsay. Who said that people with a mental illness do not get better or recover when in fact with the right kind of medical help? Yes they do. People with a mental illness can and do make a full recovery and go on to lead a normal healthy life. No it is not true that by gazing into the eyes of a person with a mental illness you can tell they are mad (As some people word it)

Although there are many signs and symptoms that show of a mental illness being present in a patient it is only those in the world of medicine that are in a position to diagnose if a developing mental illness is coming to the fore., All age groups and people from different cultures can suffer from having a mental health problem. By talking to your doctor if you are feeling down, depressed or suffering from panic attacks is a sign of coping with your condition.
