Methadone
What is methadone, the people other than the doctors themselves will be that of the heroin addict who can come forward and tell you all you need to know. However in saying that, an addict of hard drugs may not always know the true ins and outs. Methadone is a narcotic pain reliever, similar to morphine. It also reduces withdrawal symptoms in people addicted to heroin or other narcotic drugs without causing the "high" associated with the drug addiction. Methadone is used as a pain reliever and as part of drug addiction detoxification and maintenance programs. Once again the purpose for why this drug is prescribed can be that of many other conditions and illnesses.
Abuse in the consumption intake of methadone can increase risks of serious side effects which can lead to death. Even if you have used other narcotic medications, you may still have serious side effects from methadone. Methadone can slow your breathing, fatalities have occurred when the breathing has weakened. Common sense prevails here for your well being as to not take another person’s prescription drug. What may work for one patient may not for the other even though they have the same ailment? Each individual differs so as do the treatments along with severities associated with that particular condition.
If you suddenly stop using methadone then you can expect severe discomfort from the withdrawal symptoms, this is a motion that has to be guided by your GP to keep you safe.
Call your doctor if you miss doses or forget to take your medication for longer than 3 days in a row. Never try to catch up with forgotten medication it can cause serious health problems. Let your doctor determine what to do. Alcohol and methadone not a safe mixture.
Methadone can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful doing anything that requires you to be awake and alert at all times like driving a car on the road or even crossing it.
Methadone may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Keep any medicinal drugs out of reach from young children and in a safe place. Do not use this medication if you have ever had an allergic reaction to a narcotic medicine (examples include codeine, morphine, Oxycontin, Darvocet, Percocet, Vicodin, Lortab, and many others). Like any drug and depending on the individual it is best to ask your doctor if you are concerned about becoming dependant on the drug you may have be prescribed to help your health problem. Some people are a lot stronger than others where they can overcome this, however if you come under the weak latter category then your doctor can help wean you down resulting in weaning off the drug in question altogether. |
